we have a social history of learning disability research group here at the
Open University of which I am joint chair. It began in 1996. We have
produced two books and a number of papers, and attempt to be inclusive in
our approach, ie working with people with learning difficulties at a number
of levels.
the books are both produced by the British Institute of learning Disability
(BILD).
the first by Atkinson et al (eds) Forgotten Lives 1997, the second by
Brigham et al Crossing Boundaries (2000). There was also a speciall issue of
the British Journal of Learning Disabilities on history - June 2001.
We also have a series of conferences, annually, again inclusive - speakers
and attenders include people with learning difficulties, practitioners and
academics, and the dialogue can be scintillating .
The next will be held on 4th december 2002 at the Open University, Milton
Keynes, UK, and is very reasonably priced at £25 with concessions for
unwaged etc. The theme will probably be the history of advocacy and self
advocacy. Please email Christine Finch ([log in to unmask]) to be put on the
mailing list
