Hi All (and particularly, Larry, Brendan, Laurence and Michael)
Whilst I appreciate only too well how easily our discussions on the list get
over-heated (after eight years of trying to arbitrate in the tangle that
often results), I think maybe it is time to draw a quiet line under recent
exchanges.
This would be a great service to me, as it is now occupying too much of my
time as administrator trying to pacify and monitor various grievances. I
have a number of members who have been upset by the tone of messages, a
number who have left the list as a result and several students who feel too
scared to post, in case they are attacked in similar style.
Without any desire to take sides or to censor opinion, there really has to
be a more considerate way to debate in public spaces...please?
The only sanction I have available to me, apart from asking nicely (which I
have already done twice) is to suspend future offenders from the list. I
have never had to use that option and do not relish the prospect but I'm not
sure what else to try if it continues.
Best Wishes
Mark Priestley (list administrator)
