Hi,
France does seem to be an interesting study for surveillance - not that I
can claim to be knowledgeable on this! My interest is in computer/network
security and up until the mid 1990's (tbh, can't properly recall when)
encryption technology was illegal for personal use. This is no longer the
case with most EU nations encouraging its use, as directed by various EU
directives. Part of the debate in France (and to some extent all of the EU)
centres around the discovery of Echelon and the effect it was having on
French commercial interests. There's a growing mountain of web sources for
Echelon so I'll leave that for others to look into.
Cheers,
Bob.

Subject: The surveillance debate in France
Dear all,
As a new member of the list i thought i'd take this opportunity to
introduce myself. My name is Daniel Langton and i am an undergraduate at
the University of Durham studying European Studies and French. I have
joined this list because my dissertation is on the state of the
surveillance debate in France and i am looking for information. So, if
anyone has any ides for interesting sources then i'd love to hear from
you!
Regards,
Daniel
