Subject: Conference on Molecular Biology in the 20th Century - please
forward
Molecular Biology in the 20th Century
A joint Royal Institution-Wellcome Centre Conference to mark the 50th
Anniversary of the Determination of the Structure of DNA
At the Royal Institution
On 28-29 April 2003
This conference will be part of the major series of celebrations planned
to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of the papers on the
structure of DNA by Crick and Watson and by Franklin and Wilkins in
Nature on 25 April 1953. While the occasion of the conference is the
anniversary of the publication of the papers in Nature, we would like
the speakers at the
meeting to cast their net wider than this particular event and to
reflect on the development and impact of molecular biology generally. In
particular papers that deal with contextual aspects of the subject (for
example interdisciplinary development of the science, social and
economic aspects and international comparisons) will be especially
welcomed. While part of
the audience for this conference will be scientists and historians, we
will also be trying to engage the interests of a broader public in the
history of
one of the major sciences of the 20th century. There is a strong
possibility that a significant contribution towards the expenses of
speakers from
overseas can be made. Offers of papers, by 1 March 2002 to Dr Frank
James, Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle Street, London, W1S 4BS.
