that's certainly my understanding --wearnt originally, never was thereafter.
presently ("officially" --what does *that* mean?) styled a "basilica."
which, i suppose, is used to designate "a REALLY big church." (Sacre Coeur is
a basilica also, i believe.)

yep.
which, of course, it is --bigger than quite a few cathedrals, esp. those in
more or less minor, out-of-the-way-places.
i had a kind of reverse shock of this nature when i visited southern france in
the late '60s and found myself in several "cathedrals" which were so
(comparatively) tiny as to not deserve the name --or so i thought at the
time.
