Sylvia Lennie England Scholarship

For the study of the decorative arts and material culture of the
Renaissance at MA level

Applications are invited for this two-year scholarship designed to support
a student on the History of Design MA Course (Renaissance specialism)
taught jointly by the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Royal College of Art.

This two-year full-time specialism offers a unique opportunity to study
Renaissance decorative arts and material culture in Italy and England,
within their wider European context. At the heart of its interdisciplinary
approach is a desire to understand why human artefacts look the way they do
within a broad historical perspective. Among the issues the course
considers are: artistic skills and workshop production, science and
technology, patronage and consumption, objects in the domestic interior and
aesthetic ideas.

The unrivalled Renaissance collections of the V&A provide a highly
stimulating context for such study. Students also have an opportunity to
research and work on a project with curators in one of the collections. The
rich holdings of books and manuscripts of the National Art Library are also
available to students. The RCA, an institution totally dedicated to the
postgraduate study of art and design, supplies an academic framework for
investigating design processes within the broader context of historical and
contemporary design practice. The teaching programme includes visiting
lecturers from: The Warburg Institute, Royal Holloway College (University
of London), University of Sussex, The British Museum and Imperial College
of Science, Technology and Medicine. Speakers for the open programme of
Research Seminars have included: Richard Goldthwaite, Peter Burke, Paul
Hills, Suzy Butters, Evelyn Welch, Deborah Howard, Caroline Elam, Lisa
Jardine and many others.
