David commented on his difficulty getting through to the new PRO 1901 census
site. According to The Times this morning over 20 million people tried to
log on yesterday, and only 1 million managed to get through because the
servers were totally overloaded. They are trying to put more in, but these
things take time. Exactly the same happened when the FamilySearch site
opened a few years ago, but things settled down after a week or two, and IBM
had sold a few more computers!
The 20 million outstripped the hits on the BBC's news site in the immediate
aftermath of Sept 11, which was only 18 million.
