Central European University - History Department
Central European University (CEU) announces a search
for two full-time academic positions in its Department
of History. The appointments will be made starting
with the academic year 2002/2003.
CEU is an English speaking graduate research
university located in Budapest; Hungary. Its primary
mission is to contribute to the development of open
societies in Central and Eastern Europe and the former
Soviet Union by promoting academic excellence -
including high level research - and civic commitment.
CEU enrolls each year about 800 students from more
than 40 countries, including all former communist
countries. The teaching staff consists of about 100
faculty from more than 30 countries.
For these two positions, we are primarily looking for
promising junior scholars and dynamic mid-career
specialists who are interested in contributing to our
effort to be a leading center of research and teaching
with a focus on the comparative history of Central,
Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The ideal candidate
we have in mind is ready for new challenges and for
expanding into uncharted territory. Applications from
historians with a willingness to think in terms of
transnational approaches or "shared histories", and of
the interrelatedness of gender, race and class, are
welcome. The thematic foci of the search are as
follows:
(1) Twentieth-century dictatorships, in relation to
the history of democracy, to collective memory as a
contested territory, and to legacies of empires,
nation-building, ethnic conflict and coexistence
(2) Humanity between nature and culture: environmental
history, the history of science and/or medicine
The University would like to attract scholars who are
willing to make a long-term commitment to living and
working in the region. The successful candidate is
expected to be familiar with at least one of the
languages of the region (German included), to have
done some research of regional relevance, and to
possess an experience in lecturing in English. The
initial contract is for up to four years, and is
renewable. The full time teaching load is 12 credits
(1 credit equals 12 classroom hours). Employees who
are not citizens or permanent residents of Hungary
will be required to obtain a work permit. The
compensation package is subject to Hungarian taxation
regulations.
Please send applications to the Rector of CEU c/o
Judit Pallós, Human Resources Office, Central European
University, H-1051 Budapest, Nádor u. 9., Hungary

application package should include: CV, a list of
publications, one sample article or book chapter that
in your judgement the most faithfully represents your
achievements, a short presentation of your research
plans, and the names and addresses of three referees
(with reference to the code number HISTORY2001).
