I'd second that and also point to the silence on the issue (on this
forum and elsewhere). As has been pointed out to me this is only
QR money but many departments made (short to medium term)
strategic decisions that will, I am sure, be severely affected by
such a massive loss of funding. We should also remember that
RAE gradings might themselves be the result of misguided RAE
strategy (eg quantity rather than quality) rather than poor research.
A related issue might also be the decision to remove the MaSN
(maximum student number) controls from 2002-3. A potential
double-whammy!
