Living in rural North Wales, I tend to agree with Hilary on this.
Currently we are fighting a campaign to prevent the building of a Tesco
superstore on the edge of town (Holywell/Treffynnon). The store will
obliterate small traders in the town centre, raise the unemployment levels
and devastate small scale producers in the surrounding family farms.
The store has not yet got passes the planners. However, this is the second
time in 6 months that Tesco has applied for planning permission.
We are using a number of research reources to back our case (see refs below)
and have found George Monbiot's 'Captive State: the corporate takeover of
Britain' (2000) Macmillan very useful.
Is anyone aware of any other good studies of the impact of supermarkets on
local economies which might assist our case?
If so, please contact me.
Regards
David
