Holy Untranslatable?
Translating Sacred Texts
One-day Conference to be held at the Centre for Translation and
Comparative Cultural Studies University of Warwick on Saturday
11th May 2002

Theology and Religious Studies, University of Glasgow
and
Christopher Shackle
Professor in Languages and Culture of South Asia and the Study of
Religions at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London
are the keynote speakers at the opening session chaired by
Susan Bassnett
pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Warwick and professor of
the Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies
The aim of the conference is to draw together people working in the
fields of Literature, Theology, Medieval and Early Modern History,
Translation, Linguistics, Cultural and Media Studies and any other
relevant areas to discuss the implications of translating sacred
texts in terms of exegesis, teaching and reception. It is hoped that
delegates will offer papers from historical and contemporary
perspectives. Proposals for papers of 20 minutes are invited on the
following areas: untranslatability, poetic transfer, text to screen,
religious language, exegesis v. translation, cultural problems,
motives for translating, the oral tradition, translating metaphor,
gender issues, linguistic problems, domestication v. making
strange, manipulation through translation, Humanism, Luther's
translation theory, multiple source texts. It is hoped that a
publication will result from the proceedings. Abstracts of about 300
words for 20 minute papers should be sent by 30thJanuary 2002 to
Dr. Lynne Long at the Centre. Registration for the day's
proceedings, (keynote speeches and papers) will cost =A335 if paid
by 15th March 2002, =A345 between 15th March and 10th May and
=A350 on the day. Cheques to be made payable to The University of
Warwick and sent to The Centre for Translation and Comparative
Cultural Studies, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL. Tea
and coffee is included in the fee. University facilities will be
available for meals and a list of accommodation in the area is
available on request or from the web.
The University of Warwick is easily accessible by rail (go to
Coventry or Leamington Spa stations) or by air (Birmingham
airport).
