Once upon a time, in the bad old days, which the politicians have saved us
from, (pause here for the congregation to reply "All praise to the
politicians") there were institutions called "Convalescent Hospitals" and
"Cottage Hospitals" that took little old men and ladies who couldn't manage
at home because of an acute illness, or because a carer had become ill, but
these were deemed to be a waste of the poor tax payers money and so the
nasty things were shut down.
In those bad old days little old ladies and gentlemen who were poorly at
home would be visited by a District Nurse, who would nurse them, that is
attend to their physical, psychological and spiritual needs. This was so
ghastly that the politicians said the care had to be done by Carers
employed by Social Services. These wonderful people are not authorised to
do anything physical, psychological or spiritual, but they can make a
cheese sandwich and a stewed cup of tea for lunch at 10am before forcing
the little old lady to sign a form saying they will help pay their wages.
The local G.P. used to visit daily when they were ill and usually make them
better, but now they are kept out of harms way in a surgery doing staff
appraisals, audit reports, annual reports, business plans and attending
courses on how to do appraisals, audit reports, annual reports, business
plans because the lazy duffers didn't learn it at medical school as every
politician knows they should have.
I'm sorry all the acute beds are full with people who can't live at home,
but then at least we are lucky enough to live in this Brave New World of
the politician.
