to begin work in March 2002 on a project entitled :
" The rights of workers in garment industry subcontracting chains: a
research, education and action project with workers organisations in Asia
and Eastern Europe."
1. Research Co-ordinator : to investigate the global operation of the
garment industry and to support the research of organisations in Asia and
East Europe.
Full time 12 months or up to 18 months pro rata
Salary : £18,315
2. Local Researcher : to investigate garment subcontracting chains in a
specific UK locality.
Full time 6 months or up to 12 months pro rata
Salary : £ 16,574
The Research Co-ordinator will be based in the Manchester office of WWW.
The Local Researcher can be based in any suitable location but will be
required to attend meetings in Manchester.

Research Co-ordinator
The research co-ordinator will :
· Provide an overview of the processes of international subcontracting in
the garment industry
· Monitor other global developments in the industry, notably the
implications of the MFA phase- out
· Network with academic and other researchers undertaking related work
· Compile information in appropriate forms for disseminating to project
partners
· Respond to specific requests for information from project partners
· Undertake research on particular companies or supply chains in accordance
with the needs of partners
· Draw together common themes and research problems on the basis of reports
from partners
· Work with the Project Manager to oversee all the research and suggest
modifications if necessary
· Work with the Web Site Manager to prepare suitable information for Web
site dissemination
· Prepare monthly research reports for the management committee
· Prepare a final research report incorporating the findings of partner
organisations
Local researcher
The local researcher will :-
· Identify a focus for the research in terms of either a geographical
location or particular company
· Carry out the necessary research in order to map out as far as possible
the production chain from buyer to homeworker
· Document differences in labour conditions and workers demands in
different work units
· Network other research programmes and with trade unions and homeworking
organisations
· Ensure that the results of the research are disseminated back to workers
and others involved in the research
· Liase with the Research Co-ordinator and other local researchers on a
regular basis
· Prepare a final research report
Project Managers
Main Project Manager
The main Project Manager will :-
· Assume overall responsibility for the project and ensure coherence
between the different components.
· Oversee the work of staff both in the UK and abroad and deal with any
personnel issues.
· Manage the UK office base
· Work with the Assistant Project Manager to ensure the flow of financial
and reporting information to and from partner organisations
· Work with the Research Co-ordinator and Web Page Manager to ensure the
dissemination of appropriate research information to partners
· Establish appropriate links with other organisations in the UK and elsewhere
· Organise a Project Workshop in Asia at the beginning of Year Two
· Organise UK meetings/workshops to discuss issues arising from the project
· Supervise the production and piloting of draft educational materials
· Represent the work of the project in the Ethical Trading Initiative,
Labour Behind the Label and other forums
· Produce and disseminate project updates and reports
· Work with the Assistant Project Manager to produce reports for Funders
1. Assistant Project Manager / Project Manager ( finances )
The Assistant Project Manager will :
· Establish a system for financial management and accounting
· Manage the flow of funds to partner organisations and oversee financial
and other reporting in accordance with the project timetable
· Supervise the work of the finance/office administrator
· Supervise processes of monitoring and evaluation
· Manage the preparation of reports to the Community Fund and other project
funders
· Represent the work of the project in appropriate UK forums
Admin workers
1. Web Page Manager/ Information Officer
The Web Page Manager will :-
· Manage the production of information for dissemination through WWW's Web
page
· Set up appropriate Web facilities for the exchange of information between
partners during the research stage of the project
· Assist with the production and dissemination of project reports and other
materials
2. Finance and office administrator
The Office Administrator will :-
· Undertake regular book keeping
· Conduct international bank transfer
· Manage office equipment and supplies
· Organise the office resource base
· Assist with minute taking and reporting
