New Health and Well-Being Council will play key role, says Jane Hutt
The new National Health and Well-Being Council will have a real and
important contribution to make in how we create and deliver health and
well-being policies in Wales, Health and Social Services Minister Jane Hutt
said today.
"Creating the Council emphasises once more the Welsh Assembly Government's
commitment to listening to the communities we serve," she said. "Health
crosses many boundaries and touches many lives. It is this diversity which
requires us to ensure that health policy-making seeks to take account of
these diverse influences."
The Council will give the Assembly access to a rich source of opinion and
advice about all aspects of health and well-being issues. It will:
* Support the Welsh Assembly Government in discharging its
responsibilities for improving health services and engaging a full range of
stakeholders in the development of policies and plans.
* Provide advice on policy and monitor progress of the implementation
of the NHS Plan.
* Commission advice from other forums/groups on health and well-being
issues.
*
* The membership of the council will include the broadest possible
range of interests such as:
*
* Patients groups;
* Voluntary sector;
* Social care;
* Local government;
* NHS staff and professional bodies;
* Groups which are currently under-represented such as those working
for children, mental health issues and ethnic minorities.
*
*
* The Council will meet at least twice a year and all meetings will be
open to the public.
* Jane Hutt said: "The creation of the National Health and Well-Being
Council represents another important step forward in the renewal process.
Over the coming weeks I will be seeking nominations for the Council. I look
forward to working with the Council as we pursue a shared aim - that of
creating an NHS in Wales which is more responsive to the needs of our
population and which is well equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st
century."
