Subject: RE: Fonts in CSS
Dear Sheila,
Yes, we have had this problem. We pinned down the problem as follows.
1. Specifying just 'sans-serif' works on all browsers / platforms (I am
talking about IE and NN 5/6 and Macs and PCs running all common op.system
versions.
2. Specifying just 'serif' works on all Macs / browsers we tested and most
PCs. BUT specifically it does not work on a PC running IE 6 without service
pack 1 installed -- my guess would be that your office machines do have this
pack installed but Mr/Mrs average home user does not.
The work around is to add explicit fonts to the style sheet. We seem to have
covered nearly everything using times, times new roman, serif. You could add
Georgia (a serif font specially designed for good on-screen legibility by
Matthew Carter for Microsoft and provided automatically with IE).
