We did the same as Nicola when we revised our web pages. Design experts
can come up with a great look for you but they aren't in a position to
know what is the most important piece of information, who you are trying
to reach etc.
If nothing else I'd suggest you go through the whole iteration with a
small in-house team, say a student, staff rep, library rep (they're good
at the info organisation side) and marketing person. When you're happy
that you've drafted something that works, it can then be passed to a
designer. And the designer can be briefed about the relative importance of
pieces of information and can integrate that into the design.
It's also cheaper!
