In the Guidance on Submissions (RAE 2/99) institutions were told that they
would be invited to indicate any parts of their RAE submissions which
should be removed before publication for reasons of security.
The RAE manager wrote to all institutions last Autumn informing them that
the RAE submissions would be published in 2002 following the announcement
of the results. He invited them to identify instances in which publication
of information on researchers and their work could potentially be to the
detriment of their personal safety.
Having implemented the requests from institutions a further reminder was
sent out in June repeating this invitation and giving institutions an
opportunity to verify the processing of amendments already received.
As a result of these invitations over 1500 research outputs and 300
individuals were removed from the database.
Before finally publishing the information the HEFCE staff contacted every
institution to verify that they were content with their research output
listings with respect to personal safety and security.
