Portals 2002: an Institutional Imperative
A one day conference is planned for 1st July 2002 at the University of
Nottingham for senior managers in Post 16/ Higher Education. The Conference
is jointly sponsored by the University of Nottingham and JISC, and is the
first European conference devoted specifically to using portals within post
16 education.
This conference is aimed predominantly at senior management, and
decision-makers within institutions. The emphasis is on vision, rather than
technology. Speakers from Europe, UK and the United States representing a
wide range of portal developments, will be demonstrating how their
institutions are already providing, or beginning to develop, successful
portal services. As well as the main presentations,(which include University
of British Columbia and University of California at Berkeley from the US,),
the conference will enable delegates to view a number of case studies from
UK Universities.
Also represented will be JISC who will be explaining how institutional
portal developments fit into the context of Information Environment Strategy
(http://www.jisc.ac.uk/dner/development/IEstrategy.html) which sees a
complementary role for subject based and institutional portals, allowing the
end user access to an ever increasing range of quality digital resources in
a coherent and managed fashion.
What is so very different, and novel for Higher Education, is how 'Portals'
binds together so many agendas and budgets that are traditionally isolated,
except at the most senior level. This conference therefore, is likely to be
an entirely new mix of delegate: as well as Senior Managers
(Vice-chancellors, Pro-Vice Chancellors, Principals), there will be budget
holders from Computing Centres, Libraries, Management Information Systems,
Publicity, Administrative and Academic departments.
Not just portal solution providers are being encouraged to exhibit, but also
suppliers of linked systems, whether these be administrative, learning or
library related, who can demonstrate a commitment to the concept of
interoperability with a portal.
