Centre for Transport Studies
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Imperial College London
The Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London invites
applications from suitably qualified candidates for a number of new
research posts in the field of transport modelling.
1. Post Doctoral Research Assistant: Optimising the Use of Partial
Information on Urban and Regional Systems (OPUS)
The aim of this project, which is supported under the European
Commission's 5th Framework research programme, is to develop a generic
statistical framework for the optimal combination of complex spatial and
temporal data from survey, census, real-time and telematics sources. The
work will involve the development of (a) statistical models to characterise
the spatial and temporal aspects of sampling and non-sampling variation
and based on this (b) algorithms for the optimal combination of data from
different sources. Applications will include the combination of different
type of transport data and the combination of transport and health data.
The project will involve close collaboration with a number of academic
groups throughout Europe and with public authorities and commercial
collaborators in the UK and overseas.
Applicants should qualified to doctoral level in a relevant aspect of
statistical science and/or epidemiology. Prior experience in transport
modelling is desirable, but not essential.
The appointment would be for 36 months, with the possibility of
extension. Salary will be on the RA1A scale (£17626-£26491 plus £2134
London Weighting), depending on age and experience.
2. Post Doctoral Research Assistant: Improving the Efficiency of
Travel by Improved Activity Scheduling
The aim of this project, which is supported under the joint Engineering
and Physical Sciences Research Council/Department for Transport
"Future Integrated Transport" programme is to develop a
personal/household scheduling function for mobile computing devices. It
will involve the design and execution of relevant surveys and the analysis
and modelling of multi-day travel behaviour datasets. The project involves
collaboration with academic groups in Switzerland and Canada and with a
number of UK industrial partners.
Applicants should qualified to doctoral level, with a strong mathematical
and statistical background, ideally in a relevant aspect of travel behaviour
research or a closely related field.
The initial appointment would be for 24 months, with the likelihood of
extension to 36. Salary will be on the RA1A scale (£17626-£26491 plus
£2134 London Weighting), depending on age and experience.
3. Research Assistant: The Implications of Income, Taste and
Substitution Effects for the Assessment of User Benefits using Discrete
Choice Models
The aim of this project, which is supported under the Department for
Transport's "New Horizons" research programme is to explore the
implications for user benefit measures derived from discrete choice
models of income effects, taste variation and complex product
substitution patterns. The work will involve a literature review, the
development of relevant software tools and the undertaking of numerical
experiments, linked to real datasets.
Applicants should have a strong mathematical and statistical background,
ideally with experience in economic and/or econometric modelling. A
postgraduate qualification in transport would be desirable, but is not
essential. Applicants without a PhD will be encouraged to register for a
higher degree.
The initial appointment would be for 12 months, with the possibility of
extension. Salary will be on the RA1A scale (£17626-£26491 plus £2134
London Weighting), depending on age and experience.
Applications including CV and the names and addresses (including fax and
email, if possible) of two referees should be submitted as soon as possible
