NEW POSTGRADUATE STUDIES PROGRAMME IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
AT CURDS, UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE
Regional development is undergoing a period of unprecedented change.
New debates about the 'knowledge economy' and 'learning regions',
'globalisation', 'competitiveness', 'inclusion' and 'sustainability'
are profoundly changing the nature of regional development processes,
institutions and policies. Devolution and 'regionalisation' are
changing administrative and governance structures at the national,
regional, sub-regional and local levels in the nations and regions of
the UK. Together, these inter-related developments are generating new
challenges and a demand to build capacity for analysis, strategy and
policy-making for regional development amongst individuals and
institutions in the public, private and voluntary and community
sectors.
The Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS),
University of Newcastle, is launching a new programme of postgraduate
study in September 2002. The new CURDS MA, Diploma and Certificate in
Regional Development connect directly with this emerging regional
agenda.
For each course participant, the courses aim:
1) to provide knowledge and understanding of contemporary regional
development and governance theory, policy and practice in the European
context;
2) to develop the practical skills and capabilities required to
engage, research and participate in the emergent regional development
agenda;
3) to achieve a relevant qualification in Regional Development at MA,
Diploma or Certificate level.
Course modules include: Regional Development Theory and Policy,
Regional Governance, Regional Information Society and the E-Economy,
Regional Development: Methodology, Analysis and Statistics,
Universities and Regional Development, Regional Development and
Governance in Europe, Labour Markets, Skills and Training and the
Research Dissertation. The programme has been validated by the
Institution of Economic Development (IED).
