RESEARCH LAUNCH: PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR URBAN SUSTAINABILITY
I am writing to invite you to the launch of a major new research report
being published by the RICS Foundation on how indicators of sustainability
are being used to monitor and drive the performance of towns and cities. The
term 'sustainability' has seen a gradual shift away from use by pressure
groups and idealists to acceptance by mainstream businesses and
policy-makers. This new research looks at what is now understood by
sustainability, how it can be measured and what this might mean for everyone
involved in planning, creating and maintaining the built environment.
The research, which was carried out by David Fell and Jayne Cox of Brook
Lyndhurst and Mark Thurstain-Goodwin of University College London, is being
launched on 4 July at 8:30am at the RICS Foundation, 12 Great George Street,
London SW1P 3AD. The event should be over by 10:00am at the latest. In view
of your interest in this area, we would like to invite you to attend and
contribute to what I think will be a stimulating debate on an issue that is
of importance to all of us. As well as the researchers who will be
presenting their work, we will also hear from Professor Anne Power,
Professor of Social Administration at the London School of Economics, and
Jim Green, a member of the Environment Faculty of the RICS, who will be
sharing with us their thoughts on how this topic impacts on the industry and
policy communities.
The research looks at the conceptual issues surrounding sustainability in
the context of the built environment, then goes on to provide an overview of
the practical efforts being made to develop indicators of urban
sustainability by businesses, policy-makers and urban communities in
general. The researchers then put forward suggestions as to how the debate
can be carried forward in future and how practitioners may become engaged at
different levels.
The recommendations that the researchers put forward are challenging but
realistic, and we see this as a real opportunity to debate these issues and
to try to plot a way forward. Everyone attending the launch will have the
opportunity to purchase the full report with a 25% discount.
I do hope that this is of interest to you. If you would be interested in
coming to this launch, please reply to me and I will reserve a place.
