Latest RICS Foundation research paper: The contribution of town and country
planning to coastal management in England
This research, by Jane Taussik of the University of Portsmouth, looks at the
processes used for the management of the coastal zone and suggests that the
usual sectoral coastal management regimes create a situation in which no
single body is able to resolve the coast's complex environmental management
issues. The report recommends the adoption of integrated approaches to
coastal management, something which requires collaboration by all players.
The research considers town and country planning to be a key player in
coastal management and calls on collaborative planning theory to support a
model of interaction between these activities. National and regional
studies, which include specific examination of shoreline management,
demonstrate that, in England, the model is appropriate but various elements
are missing or weak.
