Dear list members,
River Basin Management is a topic of increasing interest and importance
-
seen not least by the recent floods in Central Europe.
Therefore, I am happy to circulate Matthias Grottker's (Luebeck
Polytechnic University) invitation to the 17th European Junior Scientist
Workshop on exactly this topic to you. Some places are still available.
We would be grateful if you could circulate this invitation to young
scientists (and others) who are interested in this topic. From my own
experience I can assure you that workshops in such an informal
setting can be most productive and rewarding.
Best regards from the Elbe catchment

17th European Junior Scientist Workshop
"River Basin Management"
31.10. – 3.11.2002, Eekholt Deer Park (near Hamburg), Germany
Dear colleague,
this is the final announcement including the tentative program (see
below) of a very informal workshop I am planning for autumn 2002. The
idea is to bring young colleagues (in mind) together to have some days
of intensive professional discussions and some time to learn to know
each other.
The typical participant would be engaged in detailed research work, be
i.e. between or around Master and Ph.D. level, be ready to actively
participate and to present some of his/her scientific
ideas/results/problems. The idea of the workshop is not only to listen
and to watch but to learn from and help each other in solving scientific
problems.
The informality of the workshop is documented by the fact that we are
going to meet in the seclusion of Eekholt Deer Park with rustic
accommodation (sleeping bags, share rooms), self cooking and as little
organisation as necessary. A series of 15 workshops on different topics
since the early nineties are documenting the success of this concept.
Each participant should prepare a technical/scientific
paper-presentation on his/her project and be ready for detailed
scientific discussion and work during the course. Under the main topic
on river basin management your paper should cover at least two of the
following keywords:
*catchment hydrology, morphology and hydraulics, water quality
*classification/status/ standard/modelling, effects of urban
*drainage/agriculture/forestry, aquatic habitats, aquatic biocoenosis,
*riverine ecosystem, ecological integrity, EC framework water directive,
management tools.
Since approximately 10-12 further participants are welcome, I like to
ask every recipient to transmit this invitation to several junior
scientists in your country who are working on the workshops subject.
Complete registration until 6th October 2002 includes:
* Payment of € 100 “workshops fee”, transfered to my account: Dresdner
Bank Lübeck, Germany, bank code 23080040, acount no.: 0351042600.
The fee is balanced against the expences for accommodation, food and
drinks and the difference is returned in the end of the workshop.
* Full paper (maximum 10 pages) with the preliminary title of your
presentation.
* Full name and complete address incl. phone, fax and email.
After I shall have received your registration (preferably by mail:
[log in to unmask]) I shall set up the final program and circulate
it to each participant of the workshop.
Eekholt is located about 20 km south of Neumünster and north of Hamburg.
Public transport is hardly available. Consequently, transport from
Hamburg airport and Lübeck main railway station shall be organized by
me. Further information on the location of the Eekholt Deer Park shall
follow to the participants.
I am looking forward to your reply.
With best regards
Matthias Grottker
