MSc by research
Water and wastewater management options for a new peri-urban development

School of Water Sciences, Cranfield University

Project details: MSc by research funded by J.J. Gallagher Ltd.
(representing Joint Venture Partnership for Elstow Garden Village)
Student scholarship of up to £10,000 available for a one year research
position leading to a MSc by research qualification
Supervisors: Dr P. Jeffrey and Dr. C. Diaper
The post is open to a graduate in science or engineering preferably with
some experience and knowledge in the field of water and wastewater
management.

Rationale: Elstow Garden Village is a proposed peri-urban development
of 4500 new homes, situated approximately 10 miles from Cranfield
University. As construction has not yet been initiated the situation
presents the opportunity to assess the feasibility of different water and
wastewater management options for the site prior to development. A
consortium of stakeholders will be involved in the development of these
options, including the water provider, local council, the Environment
Agency and other local organisations.

Aim(s): The primary aim of the work is to provide a detailed scoping study
of the possible water and wastewater management options applicable to the
Elstow Garden Villages site. Assessment will include demand management
options, water recycling and reuse and sustainable urban drainage options.
The feasibility of options will be assessed in terms of their
costs/benefits, public and corporate acceptance and in relation to current
legislation and guidance. Collaboration with the stakeholder consortium
will be required throughout the project. The study will be mainly desk
based but opportunities to travel and present project findings to
stakeholders and at conferences will be included.

Application procedure: For an informal discussion on this project please
contact Dr Elise Cartmell. Tel +44 (0)1234 750111 x2546, or email
