Garbage Yet Again: The Science of Garbage
Pickup day.
As I recover the empty can,
I notice a small box has slid
away from the driveway
on its way to the neighbors
a hundred feet away,
And I wonder, why we do not
study the science of garbage,
what trash would tell us
if universities funded chairs
to determine the Laws of Refuse?
If Michelangelo had studied the flight
of soggy napkins, would Magellan
have been the first to fly nonstop
from Madrid to San Salvador?
If Mendel had crossed-bred kitty-litter
and pepperoni, would he have advanced
genetics, so DNA forensics would find
the Lindberg kidnapper without doubt?
If Newton had been bonked
by a rotting apple, would gravity
have lead Franklin to Relativity,
Einstein stuck in the patent office?
Forget astrology, numerology,
and political science. It is past
time to endow chairs and construct
labs for the Science of Garbagology.
