After several very helpful comments on this one I thought I'd try again and
see what people thought.
TRAVELLER'S TALE
Most days the next footstep
had an element of being
in a continuous cycle
where movement to the next place
was the only meaning
compared to those going home
each day was like being outside
the ritual of arrival and departure.
To survive at all had prime importance
where food was sought and bought
on reaching that town or village
shelter found in places
to which you would never return.
Like Matsuo Basho's narrow road
a poem was the only remembrance
after staff and hat were lifted
and the journey again began
on a slow curving path
where the end could not be seen.
