<< Making a Poem
Making a poem
Is like shaping a pot at a wheel.
To begin with you can't be too sure of yourself:
Too firm a hand and any roughness
Will be hard to correct.
The first crafting is the vaguest.
You don't want to frighten it away
With an alien touch,
Must let it mould itself,
Fish around for odd lines
That suggest the form of your dream.
You have to be more stern as it takes shape,
Push it forwards to a conclusion,
Become ruthless towards the end
As you make your pact
Between what you want to say
And what wants to be said.
What you end up with is a vessel
That is much like a pot,
Able to hold a little liquid,
But which is greater than craft
Because it holds what is essential
To that person at that time,
And precious to those few in the same cast;
A vessel that holds a little spirit, soul or emotion,
Whatever it is that informs the human heart.
