Gary,
Undoubtedly I know more than once I did (just as well, too), butI would
still hold that what I know about poetic forms etc is largely intuitive and
driven by self-preservation - as in don't go near that stuff. I don't think
I should suggest that this attitude does me any credit, but equally it
doesn't disqualify - and that was what I was reading into some earlier
statements that were made in this discussion - a clear implication (as I
read it) that if you don't study the poetic forms/formal poetry you
shouldn't can't call yourself a poet. elitist nonsense really - and the
comment wasn't made by yourself Gary, but David (I think).
Anyway, I certainly agree that exposure is necessary, but I think there are
many more ways than was earlier implied, and also that these ways can be
quite sufficient for the production of quality poets and writings. The local
poetry scene here in Melbourne sings with the voices of new experiences by
new generations (and old, for that matter) with many of the poets hardly
completing basic schooling, but my word they are good and you bet learning
is possible.
Anyway, nuff said. I disagree with something somebody said and it matters
not a whit. On with the show.
Cheers,
Frank
