I hesitate to join this discussion, but, as someone who trips and stumbles
over most kinds of formal verse and poetic structures I think the suggestion
that there needs to be some kind of apprenticeship in these things is
extremely limiting and patently wrong.
Get critique, expose your work, do readings - learn and seek an acceptable
'voice' for your work by allmeans - but there is no exclusive pathway to
becoming a competent poet, IM (very) HO.
