Dear Paul,
Do you mean that it is not true that on most mived poetry lists, the great
proportion of poems posted is free verse? That is certainly my experience,
and it is not a comment on theories of 20th Century poetics,it is just a
statement of how things are in the 21st century.
Kind regards,
 grasshopper

I don't think this is true at all, and anyway, it is a very glib
introduction to 20th Century poetics. Try looking at Ezra Pound's views on
the matter, where he rejected the iambic pentameter, but didn't reject the
idea of form or structure at all. (in my opinion) the iambic pentameter and
all of the rest of these forms are inherited conventions, not simply 'the
true way to write poetry'. In the past the mysteries of prosody were
supposedly the realm of a narrow elite who could not only understand the
forms, but also use them. I think that many of these supposed 'masters'
only dubiously understood or employed the forms to write what they
understood to be poetry, in order to communicate with those people, who they
realised in advance, might understand them. There were other writers who
broke these rules, we call these people 'revolutinaries' or
'revolutionists'.
