A Newly-Discovered Soliloquy of Prince Hamlet
It seems to me a natural thing
to wonder where I came from,
to want to know of life´s emergence
from molecular beginnings,
acknowledging a common link
at chemistry´s insistence.
To be in the world and of it,
yet observe and be distinct,
and separate impressions
from the objects that they fit,
brings consciousness of self
with its attendant contradictions.
So a dichotomy is formed
between the inner and the outer.
Events perceived by senses
might engender valid doubt
but emotions found within
guarantee there own defences.
Action and desire, though,
admit of some distinction.
Inaction is an option.
Or is the will to act
itself a given fact,
beyond our own volition?
And if I want or no,
and if I do or don´t,
is just a seed that grows
within the soil of flesh and bone.
Then an `I´ is just an imprint -
but still my wishes are my own!
