I know that even trying to write about anything as heavily laden with
associations from the past as the subject of the rose can be self-defeating.
The rose more than any other flower here too carries heavy baggage. I
thought having the rose speak all the way through might be something
different. Although inanimate, of course, this flower has its purpose for
being, it's "calling." And to me that purpose is stated in the last line.
Spellbound in the sense I meant it is more in keeping with the definition of
enthralled. When a really beautiful woman walks into a room, the room
becomes quiet, all attention centered on her, and perhaps then spellbound
could also be considered as you mentioned it, people frozen in time as they
were in the fairy tale, "Sleeping Beauty." Thank you for your comments, Bob.
