Some media people in the UK have been saying today's the start of National
Poetry Week! That was news to me... But it's National Poetry day on
Thursday. Maybe this occasional piece is to help be grin and bear it:
C & C welcome:
Waiting For The Nunthorpe Bus On National Poetry Day
After reading the graffiti again
I watch the moon rise, gather light, travel,
and the wind bites deep as I shiver, cough,
while stood at the stop where it should turn up,
but it doesn’t. A phone-box phone rings. Rain
I’d seen over Ragworth will soon fall here.
And beyond long lawns, neat rooms like photos
I’d glimpsed in magazines at the dentists
gleam as people watch TV, eat their teas
of Safeway fruitfulness. Lorries clatter
making fallen leaves rise, swirl like vultures,
then return to the earth. How I long for
the right word at the front, doors opening,
the bright space, somewhere to sit near the back.
