Hi all, yes, copyright is a problem. As this is an 'open' list it might be
considered a public place - therefore, in so far as it is hosted from the
UK, the UK copyright law obtains. I can't remember the exact wording but
for our kind of forum it is something like a 'reasonable percentage' for
'scholarly purposes'. Certainly not the whole piece.
Being serious about it, it's hard to believe a copyright holder would seek
to prosecute an individual our particular circumstances. But it's as well
to be aware of it. And certainly it would be tempting fate to do something
similar in 'Worm' for instance which is actively diseminated.
One other thing to be aware of is that the text of commentaries and crits
is also copyright to the originator. This means that in the strictest sense
every time I hit the auto reply button and preserve the whole text to which
I'm responding as a footer to my email (as here) I am breaking the law.
Clearly no one is going to object on this list. BUT posting a person's
comments etc off-list, without the originators express permission, is
probably one to be avoided (elsewhere I have seen international writs
threatened for this. Then again the haiku 'community' is more spiteful that
a sac of hornets).
Speak to my attorney. John

Dear Sue,
I posted a link, rather than the whole thing because I'm not
sure about copyright issues. Pehaps John could let us know what's the
position on this, if he's around? Ta.
I've never been that great an Eliot fan either,(I think he has a lot to
answer for with the trends he started with his Notes to the Wasteland) but,
my goodness, he can do the incantation bit wonderfully.
Kind regards,
grashopper
