Yeh, Gary, you write:
"Is there a difference in the phase for a period and a dash and how does
that differ from the line break or stanza break phase." Which is a strong
question!
I guess I feel that all the little marks, the punctuation, are there to help
the reader read...
I also feel that each individual poem has its own demands on commas, full
stops, dashes, and the like, that may be different from the previous poem,
and the next poem. In "free verse" I guess there's freedom in using all the
little marks (or some, or very few, or...).
I guess it's just a case of looking at a poem from all kinds of angles: the
words, the lines, the spaces, the line breaks, the way every word - and
everything else - connects, the way the words are divided - or regulated -
by punctuation, and all of how everything works to create what works OK for
each of us as the writer, and for others...
There's just so many visible things that are part of the subtleties of
presenting a poem!
Bob
PS The essay you allude to sounds kind of scarey, but intriguing! Do you
have any more details? Is it clickable onto on the Web?
