Ahren, I can understand your reading 'Nay' as cliche but where I live in
Yorkshire it is common parlance when one is dismayed as I was at the
Phillistine act of throwing a dictionary away. The line is indented to
indicate my speaking under my breath at least that is the intention. I
also saw the dictionary as an old soldier and the simile to which you
refer seemed to fall naturaly from that as did my nursing of it
