I always manage to find a copy of "The Wind in the Willows" and if left
alone I will read the whole of the first two chapters and be young again and
picnic with Moley and Ratty on the river bank.
I also found and purchased a first edition of " Pippa Passes" and
discovered Gerard Manley Hopkins in a bookshop like that and sat there
bewildered that I had got to be 35 and never even heard of him before.
Bewildered and angry that no teacher I had ever had had mentioned him even
in passing. I wanted to go out and stop everyone in the streets and tell
them what I had discovered.
Ah! second hand bookshops! they rescue, preserve and quietly promulgate our
culture.
