When There is Trouble in the Kitchen
Our kitchen trash can will not open.
It is in a pique over some imagined slight
or the other. Perhaps it does not like
what we have been dumping in it -
too many cartons from Canned Food
Warehouse or radishes. Maybe because
we do not recycle or it has an allergy
to beer. Or because we use scented
can liners or wash it often enough.
It may not like being called a can.
A can is metal and metal rusts, even
the expensive kind from Pottery Barn.
I cannot get it to open up and tell me
what is really the problem. I could
force it. After all, it is only a cheap
Wal-Mart brand. But I cannot bring
myself to break in. Even plastic should
be treated with respect. Likely the time
has come to purchase a new one.
Old Green might be as happy
in the garage with a load of oil cans,
dog food sacks and weed killer.
I will give it one more chance, a man
to man discussion to clear the air
(non-scented bag, of course.) But my
patience is wearing thin and the trash
in the sink has really piled up.
