PNG is a nice graphic format with much better compression than tif.
PNG - Portable Network Graphics
see the matlab print command for details but something like this should work
also:
PRINT -DPNG -NOUI FILENAME.PNG
or even
SAVE FILENAME.PNG
The print command also has options to set the DPI (dots per inch). There is a
function version of the print command that takes a handle to a figure and
various string inputs, useful in scripts.
