Dear Arturo,
'ahead of SPM' means to put the matlab code of interest in a directory
that is searched before SPM.
The way to determine this is to examine the Matlab path variable which
can be done by typing:
>> path
You should see your home directory at the top of the listing and spm
possibly down a few lines.
When you call a function in matlab the search for the function is done
by moving sequentially down the list of directories on the path until
the function is found. So if you want to use your own version of an spm_
... function then you should put it 'ahead' of spm on the search path.
You may modify the search path that matlab uses by putting a line
similar to the following in a file called startup.m in your home
directory:
path('/home/hernande/mycode', path);
This prepends '/home/hernande/mycode' to the default matlab path and
therefore puts the mycode directory 'ahead' of spm.
Regards,
-Martin
