The Kinetics and Dynamics of Elementary Gas-Phase Reactions
celebrating the career of Professor Ian W.M. Smith F.R.S.
School of Chemical Sciences, The University of Birmingham
September 16-18, 2002

Professor Ian WM Smith FRS will be retiring, officially, at the end of the
current academic year. A major scientific meeting will be held in his honour
from September 16-18, 2002 in the School of Chemical Sciences of The University
of Birmingham, where Ian has been Professor of Physical Chemistry since 1985,
and Mason Professor of Chemistry since 1991.
The meeting is designed to reflect Ian's research interests, and will take the
form, principally, of lectures delivered by the following 18 invited speakers,
chosen from among Ian's collaborators, colleagues and past group members.
Professor Millard Alexander, University of Maryland, USA
Professor David Clary, University College, London, UK
Professor Fleming Crim, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA
Professor David Field, University of Aarhus, Denmark
Dr Mike Frost, Heriot-Watt University, UK
Professor Gus Hancock, University of Oxford, UK
Professor Eric Herbst, Ohio State University, USA
Dr Steve Leone, Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, USA
Professor William Miller, University of California-Berkeley, USA
Professor C. Bradley Moore, Ohio State University, USA
Professor Mike Pilling, University of Leeds, UK
Professor John Polanyi, University of Toronto, USA
Dr A. R. Ravishankara, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, USA
Dr Bertrand Rowe, Université de Rennes 1, France
Dr Ian Sims, University of Birmingham, UK
Professor Dr Jürgen Troe, University of Göttingen, Germany
Professor Curt Wittig, University of Southern California, USA
Professor Dr Reinhard Zellner, University of Essen, Germany
Sessions are planned to cover the following areas:
- Reaction Dynamics and Energy Transfer
- Theoretical Chemical Dynamics and Kinetics
- Gas Kinetics and Atmospheric Chemistry
- Astrochemistry
We very much hope that you will want to attend what promises to be an exciting
time, not only looking back over a career at the forefront of science, but also
looking forward as we hear about the very latest research in this area. The cost
of the meeting will be very reasonable, owing to substantial sponsorship from a
range of organisations, including in particular the Royal Society of Chemistry
and Shell UK. Further major sponsors are expected to join these in the near
future. Substantial student bursaries will be available to lower these costs
still further for PhD students.
For further details, please visit the conference website, where you can register
to receive further details as they become available:

There will also be opportunity for contributions in the form of a poster
session, and of course there will be a special conference banquet in Ian's
honour.
