The study will seek to answer the following questions:
· How do relatively new treatments, diagnostic techniques,
neurological and neurobehavioral knowledge, and ethical guidance complicate
or illuminate long-standing neonatal dilemmas and prognostic methods?
· How do clinicians select, evaluate and manage the many
neurological-related issues when making diagnoses and prognoses and when
discussing treatment plans with parents and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU) staff?
· How do parents experience these discussions and what are babies'
neurobehavioral responses to NICU care?
· How can multi-disciplinary insights - medical, nursing, parental,
neuro-developmental, sociological, psychological, ethical and religious -
increase understanding of neuro-related NICU practice and prognoses?
· What are the strengths and gaps in current knowledge and practice?
Your role will be multi-faceted, with a primary focus on the collection,
analysis and reporting of data and you will:
· Conduct and update multi-disciplinary literature reviews on neonatal
neurology and related issues.
· Conduct ethnographic research and liase with staff in two neonatal
units, one in London and the other in Cambridge, including in-depth studies
with selected families.
· Conduct interviews with neonatal staff and parents in the units and
also during some home visits, liase where necessary with interpreters and
transcribers.
· Attend research team and advisory meetings, keeping records of these
and undertaking administrative tasks associated with the project and the
collection and collation of data.
· Maintain detailed records and contribute to the collation and
analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data and to the writing of
research reports.
· Contribute to the plans for a subsequent systematic comprehensive
critical literature review to develop from the current project.
· Attend related conferences and seminars.
You will need:
· A higher degree or equivalent in a social science. A PhD will

· Experience of ethnographic research and of quantitative and
qualitative research collection and analysis methods. This experience could
have been acquired as part of a higher degree course for appointment at

Grade II.
· Knowledge of the health services and of health services policy and
practice. Extensive knowledge of the services and their policy and practice
will be required for appointment at Grade II.
· The ability to write clearly and concisely. A good record of
publications will be required for appointment at Grade II.
