Awareness and recognition of women's mental health issues have been promoted by the production of national documents such as the NHS Plan, the NSF for Women and Mental Health and the confidential Enquiry of "Why women die?", and a document on Domestic Violence.
In particular, perinatal psychiatric problems have been highlighted, these are an area of interest to professionals including Psychiatrists, General Practitioners, Obstetricians, Health Visitors, Midwives, Community Psychiatric Nurses and Social Workers.
The Lancashire Study Day for Women and Mental Health has been organised to promote the issue of women's mental health in the perinatal period. The aim is to underline the problems of motherhood and to host a multi-disciplinary discussion of problems, possible solutions and future service provision.
