AAG 2003 CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL SESSION(S): Geographical Perspectives on Complexity Theory and
Complex Systems
LOCATION AND DATES: Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting,
March 4-8, 2003, New Orleans, LA, USA
ORGANIZERS:
Tom Crawford, Gettysburg College, [log in to unmask]
Joe Messina, Michigan State University, [log in to unmask]
Steven Manson, University of Minnesota, [log in to unmask]
DESCRIPTION: There is growing interest in understanding geographical
phenomena with complexity-based research. Topics include, but are not
limited to:
1. Theory: Geographical and complexity theories, epistemological and
ontological considerations, role of deterministic complexity (e.g., chaos,
non-linearity).
2. Methods: cellular automata, agent-based models, genetic algorithms,
genetic programs, and artificial neural networks.
3. Issues: spatiotemporal patterning, representation, interaction, local
interactions and global structure, scale, self organizing systems,
emergence, and complex adaptive systems.
4. Applications: Political and socioeconomic issues, human-environment
interaction, sustainability, and earth system science
CONTACT: Joe Messina ([log in to unmask])
TIMELINE:
August 10, 2002: This notice.
September 10, 2002: Expression of intent. Contact Joe Messina ([log in to unmask])
by this date if you are interested in being in this session. Also feel free
to contact Tom Crawford ([log in to unmask]) or Steven Manson
([log in to unmask]) if you have other questions.
September 20, 2002: AAG registration. The AAG has an on-line abstract
submission system accessible via www.aag.org. All participants must
register individually via this site. Upon registration you will be given a
