Call for Papers
The AJS seeks papers for a special issue on the uses of computation in
the social sciences. The issue will aim to describe and illustrate the
potential of computational techniques for extending and deepening
sociological reasoning and analysis. Computational techniques to be
considered might include geographic information systems, multiagent
system modeling, machine learning, automated data collection systems,
data mining, and novel forms of optimization and statistical analysis.
Papers are invited that illustrate the value of these tools for data
analysis or theory building. Also invited are critical reviews that
describe and evaluate the potential of these or related tools for
sociology or social science more broadly. The issue is tentatively
scheduled to appear in January 2004 (vol. 109, no. 4), but the
publication date may be somewhat later to accommodate the review and
revision process.
The deadline for submitting papers is December 31, 2002. Papers should
be submitted to the
AJS office (see below for details)
The issue has three coeditors:
Kathleen Carley, Carnegie Mellon University
([log in to unmask])
Nigel Gilbert, University of Surrey ([log in to unmask])
Andrew Abbott, University of Chicago ([log in to unmask])
All submitted papers will be seen by the three editors, and publication
decisions will be based on the double-blind peer-review process (the
three coeditors will necessarily know the identities of all
participants). The coeditors are happy to receive inquiries about this
special issue via e-mail.
Submission requirements: Send three (3) hard copies and one electronic
copy on diskette to the AJS editorial office at 5835 South Kimbark,
Chicago, Illinois 60637. Please include a $15 submission fee. Inquiries
about the review process or progress on a particular manuscript should
be directed to [log in to unmask], and not the three coeditors.
