Seminar Theme

Personalisation developments, including the design of personal profiles, use
of tracking data etc., began with online commerce and the need for
one-to-one relationships with customers in the early 1990s, but how can they
be applied in the context of digital libraries? Digital library "visits"
can be personalised - users will make personal selections of library
objects, which will be available on their next visit, links and objects can
be updated through recommender system integration with the online library
catalogue and other systems and there is scope to create individualised
workspace.
The Universtitat Oberta de Catalunya and The Open University are embarking
on a new programme of research into personalised library environments
through their respective projects, PESIC and the [log in to unmask] We hope
that our seminar programme provides you with the opportunity to learn from
other researchers and institutions, which have implemented MyLibrary
examples, developed personalisation and gateway tools and investigated the
usability aspects. There will be invited speakers from the field of
personalisation in digital libraries and education environments.

some familiarity with the concept of "MyLibrary" or "MyGateway" services.

in order to improve the quality and effectiveness of your service.

There will be short presentations, a keynote, case studies and project
poster displays.

Seminar programme

On arrival, delegates will receive a pack of material to include speaker
biographies and abstracts.
The programme will start at 10.00 am and finish at 4.45 pm, with a break for
lunch at 1.00 pm. Delegates may arrive from 9.30 am for tea and coffee
before the start of the seminar.
The seminar will begin with a welcome and introduction by Nicky Whitsed,
Director of Library Services, The Open University, and the new Pro Vice
Chancellor Learning & Teaching, followed by Dora Perez, Librarian,
Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (Barcelona). It will continue with a number
of talks by our guest speakers throughout the day, which will be broken into
five sessions:

The seminar will take place in the Berrill Lecture Theatre, on The Open
University campus in Milton Keynes. The parallel sessions will be divided
between the Berrill Lecture Theatre and the Presentation Room, just off the
main foyer and adjacent to the main reception.
