LIBRARY ASSISTANT VACANCY

An enthusiastic and adaptable Library Assistant is sought to join a team
providing a range of Library services to NMS staff and the public,
including services provided from exhibIT - the Museum of Scotland
electronic resource room.

You will provide support and assistance to users of exhibIT, ensuring
that visitors with varying degrees of computer literacy gain maximum
benefit from their use of the ICT-based resources provided.  You will
also participate in general NMS Library service provision: in addition
to reference and enquiry work, this will include participation in other
activities such as acquisitions, serials, inter-library loans and
collections maintenance.

You will be required to quickly develop a good working knowledge of NMS
Library collections and exhibIT resources to ensure provision of high
quality services in support of NMS research activities and public
services.

You will have recent experience of library and information work, gained
within an automated environment.  A commitment to customer care,
excellent communication/ team working skills are essential, as is a
flexible and adaptable approach to work as evening and weekend hours
will be required.

This is a casual, temporary appointment to 30 June 2003, based on a
salary of £13,000 per annum.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties
The post will be one of a team of 4 Library Assistants who participate
in the provision of a range of Library services.  The postholder will
spend approximately 50% of their time providing services for users of
exhibIT - the Museum of Scotland electronic resource room.

exhibIT

The postholder will actively participate in the provision of the exhibIT
information service within the Museum of Scotland.  They will ensure
supervision of and support to visitors, and will provide assistance to
ensure visitors with varying degrees of computer literacy gain maximum
benefit from their use of the exhibIT room information resources.

The postholder will provide high quality support to exhibIT users, based
on the development of the postholder's own knowledge of exhibIT
resources, a range of relevant networked information resources, and
knowledge of external information resources relevant to the exhibIT
remit.  Specific duties will include:

    . provision of support and assistance for visitors to ensure that
they maximise their use of the exhibIT Room  programs and resources

    . effective enquiry handling and referral to other resources both
within and outwith NMS, as appropriate

    . management of visitor flows and collation of visitor numbers and
other relevant management information

    . contribution to the development of exhibIT Room resources through
participation in user studies and monitoring use of resources

    . following troubleshooting protocols/procedures for simple hardware
and software; problems; log/immediate reporting of faults to the IT

Evening and weekend duties will include alternate Tuesdays 5pm-8pm, and
one day each weekend (Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday 12pm-5pm).

Library responsibilities

As with other Library Assistant posts, the postholder will participate
in the general Library service provision. The postholder will develop a
good working knowledge of Library collections to ensure provision of a
high quality reference and enquiry service to NMS staff at all levels,
Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and members of the
public. In addition to reference and enquiry work, this will include
participation in other activities such as acquisitions, serials,
inter-library loans and collections maintenance.  Specific duties will
include:

    . Provision of a high quality reference and information service to
NMS staff at all levels - based on own knowledge of NMS Library
collections, a range of relevant networked information resources, and
knowledge of external library and information resources relevant to the
work of NMS.

    . Provision of training and support to Library users in all areas of
Library services, including use of Library collections, Library
database, Internet, CD-ROM and other electronic resources.

    . Responsibility for physical collections management of designated
Library  area,  including maintenance of automated loans records, shelf
checks, stock taking,  shelving, binding preparation - thus ensuring
efficient access to material for NMS staff engaged in research and other
activities.

Qualifications and experience

A degree/postgraduate qualification in Librarianship/Information Science
is not appropriate for this post

The successful candidate will require:

. Education to Higher/A Level, with a minimum of 2 passes, including
English

. Library Assistant qualification (SCOTVEC, C&G, etc.), and/or at least
2 years  experience gained within a special/academic library or
information service  environment.

. Significant and recent experience and an understanding of
library/information service reference and enquiry work, user
support/training and an awareness of the principles of customer care.

. A high degree of IT literacy, with significant experience of
Windows-based applications and information resources,  including
database management (Access), CD-ROM, Internet  and multimedia.

. Experience and understanding of library housekeeping functions within
an automated systems environment, preferably Dynix.

. Good working knowledge of bibliographic resources (print and
electronic)


Personal Qualities

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as
part of a team, but without constant close supervision.
