1. 13th February - Databases on the Web, Strathclyde University
2. 14th February - Content Management on the Web, Strathclyde
University
1. Databases on the Web
09:30 - 16:30 Wednesday 13th February 2002
At Strathclyde University
Web authors and database users are becoming increasingly
aware of the massive potential for integrating web and database
technologies. There are many practical uses such as providing cost-efficient
information services or intranets, revitalising legacy database systems, as
a means of managing web-based information, and for electronic commerce.
This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web
who would like to understand how to connect purpose designed or pre-existing
databases to the internet. This workshop gives both an overview of the
different tools and techniques available and teaches the practical skills
necessary to use them. One of the first courses of its kind, it is suitable
for anyone involved in publishing via the internet or an intranet. Also
anyone involved in database development who wishes to consider integrating
web interfaces will find this workshop useful.
Workshop Requirements
In order to gain the most from this workshop, participants
will need to have a basic understanding of: HTML (including the concept of
HTML forms); how to publish files to a web server; relational databases e.g
Microsoft Access - they should understand the following terms: table, field,
record, key; the concept of SQL(details not necessary)
2. Content Management on the Web
Using XML, Style Sheets, Metadata and Dynamic HTML
09:30 - 16:30 Thursday 14th February 2002
At Strathclyde University
Web page creators are often frustrated by the limitations of
HTML in delivering structured content in a presentable format. One of the
drawbacks of HTML is that it can sometimes fail to satisfy as either as good
presentational language, or a good way of structuring information. A number
of new developments are at hand which will revolutionise how web content is
created and managed, without the need for expensive tools or programming
expertise. XML is much spoken about, but not widely understood, and its
potential is untapped, along with Style Sheets in CSS or XSL and the use of
Metadata, RDF and dynamic HTML. This workshop explains and investigates
these new developments both in concept and in practice, providing a basis
from which web authors can start to explore a new era of web content
creation and management.
This workshop is aimed at anyone who has created web pages
in HTML and wishes to learn about new developments in content creation and
management. It is not a web server or systems administration workshop.
Workshop Requirements
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a
browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer and MUST have authored simple
Web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as those for
including images and hypertext links is essential. Experience of using
Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and opening and closing
applications such as a Web browser would be helpful.
The cost of the workshops is 120 pounds for participants from UK higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees. Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
To book a place on any of these workshops and for a full list of forthcoming
workshops , go to www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/forthcoming.html
