1. Web Pages From Scratch An Introduction to Creating Web Pages 09:30 -
16:30 Thursday 20th June 2002
At Strathclyde University
For many sections of society the World Wide Web is becoming an essential
part of everyday life. Whether being used for commerce, research, education
or leisure, one of the key features of the web is the ease with which
individuals can publish on-line information. Even in a short space of time
sophisticated and exciting results can be achieved with relative simplicity.
This is a practical workshop for web users who wish to start creating their
own web pages. This updated workshop supercedes the popular and well
established Netskills workshop, "Authoring on the World Wide Web". Whether
you are providing page content for business, education or leisure, this
one-day workshop will give you the essential skills you need to make your
information available on the web.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on
sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will
each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation
slides and other relevant materials.
Workshop Requirements
Participants need no special technical skills; however basic computer skills
such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential, and experience of using
Microsoft Windows to open, save and close files, folders and applications
would be useful. Participants are expected to have seen the World Wide Web
and used a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.
2. Exploring XML
09:30 - 16:30 Friday 21st June 2002
At Strathclyde University
The advent of XML heralds a revolution in web development, providing a means
of delivering information in a variety of ways and to different devices. XML
offers new opportunities and challenges to both people creating web pages
and those involved in sophisticated back-end information systems, set to
provide a powerful and flexible alternative to the long established language
HTML.
This practical workshop, aimed at experienced HTML authors, introduces a
wide range of new and exciting possibilities from multiple content
transformations to creating WAP pages and producing XML from databases.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on
sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will
each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation
slides and other relevant materials.
Workshop Requirements
Participants are are expected to be familiar with the windows desktop and
MUST have experience in writing pages in HTML including Forms. A basic
knowledge of Cascading Style Sheets is assumed and familiarity with the
concepts of scripting and server side processing. Experience in writing
scripts would be an advantage but not essential.
The cost of the workshops is 120 pounds for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees. Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
Joining details and further information will be sent to participants prior
to the workshop.
Kind Regards
The Netskills Team
