In the seventies and eighties we carried out a lot of vibration research
using the (ex) Shell Road Vibration Machine (RVM). Along highway A16 near
Dordrecht in Holland we encountered a simular problem of house owners
complaining over vibrations due to traffic after widening the road. By lucky
chance we discovered that all the problems were due to one small uneveness
in the road. After smoothing the surface at that location no problems were
mentioned. However, if the road surface is smooth enough and the vibrations
problems cannot be related to a construction aspect, you face a real
problem. 50 m is already quite a distance for a ground R wave. So, the
frequency might be low, indicating a big wave length and a large depth at
which most of the energy is travelling. One solution might be to dig a deep
`canal´and filled it with water. I know from a presentation of a subway in
Berlin they had to make quite a deep ´canal´, in order to force the
vibration to go ´deeper´.
But there must be a lot of literature on this subject (subways, railways)
etc.
